Visiting Peacocks Leads to Lorca

The day before Halloween I had a lovely time at the zoo with friends. I yelled at some punk kids who were tormenting a group of pea hens. Standing up for beauty in the face of petty cruelty. Though of course, I hated being yelled at as a kid. It was a weird experience.

The weekend was saturated, for me, with a heightened awareness of the fierceness & gentleness of life. On Friday we lost our dear cat Euphrates, and have been grieving. A weekend so full of gentle weather, loss, friends, joy, movement, animals & birds. It led me back to one source: Federico Garcia Lorca. Enjoy!

PAISAJE

El campo
de olivos
se abre y se cierra
como un abanico.
Sobre el olivar
hay un cielo hundido
y una lluvia oscura
de luceros frios.
Tiembla junco y penumbra
a la orilla del rio.
Se riza el aire gris.
Los olivos estan cargados
de gritos.
Una bandada
de pajaros cautivos,
que mueve sus larguisimas
colas en lo sombrio.

This link has a direct homage to Lorca by Cohen.

  2. Thank you for posting this: I've not read Lorca before, but am pleased that I can understand much of the Spanish. G & I read quite a bit about his life on Wiki to update ourselves a bit.
You have provided our evening's enlightenment. Muchas Gracias!
